Adult Education

Students must be at least 18 years old by July 1st, 2026 to enroll in the Adult Education Program.
Adult Education Programs Offered:
Adult Basic Education (ABE)
Adult Basic Education (ABE) provides foundational instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics for adults age 18 and older who are functioning below a ninth-grade level.
Adult Secondary Education (ASE)
Adult Secondary Education (ASE) offers secondary-level academic instruction designed to help adult learners attain the knowledge and skills equivalent to those of a high school graduate, preparing them for college, career training, and employment opportunities.
English as a Second Language (ESL)
English as a Second Language (ESL) classes are designed for adult non-native English speakers who wish to improve their reading, writing, speaking, listening, and overall English language proficiency.
High School Completion/Diploma (HSC/HSD)
This program provides adults with the opportunity to complete the requirements needed to earn a Utica Community Schools High School Diploma. Students who test below a ninth-grade level in reading and/or mathematics may be required to enroll in Adult Basic Education (ABE) courses before entering the High School Completion/Diploma (HSC/HSD) program to strengthen the foundational skills necessary for success.
Registration Information
Registration is now open for the 2026–2027 program year. Classes begin in September 2026.
Prospective students should contact the Adult Education Office at (586) 797-6960 to schedule a registration appointment. The registration process takes approximately 2.5 hours, and all students are required to complete an in-person placement test.
To complete the registration process, students must bring the following documents to their appointment:
- A current, valid government-issued photo ID
- Proof of address
